Matlock – Via Gellia – Rowsley – Beeley – Matlock
This Pedal Stop cycle route is 26 miles long and involves only one climb of note, that of Beeley. While the Via Gellia Road is up hill it is not steep. Cafes on this cycle route are plentifull and can be found at Matlock, on Via Gellia and Rowsley (in the shopping centre). The ride can also be cut short by turning right at Rowsley onto Dale Road all the way back to Matlock, missing out the Beeley climb.
Public toilets in Matlock Bath can be found behind the tourist information centre and the cash machine is at the tourist information centre.
This cycle route starts in Matlock Bath and proceeds up on the A6 Derby Road untill you come to the traffic lights. Turn right at the lights towards Cromford then first right onto the A5912 Via Gellia Road (passing a working water wheel).The Via Gellia Road is a very long but very steady and sheltered up hill pull.Continue on the Via Gellia Road untill you reach the Holy Bush pub and turn right at the pub.Continue on this road past the pond on your left onto Ivonbrook Grange. Follow this road for a few miles turning right at the first junction onto Alport Lane. For the next few miles you have a really nice descent. Turn right at the junction at Nether Hadden turn onto the A6 heading towards Rowsley.
At this point if you do not wish to climb Beeley simply continue on the A6 heading back to Matlock. For the Beeley climb turn left at the art shop onto Chatsworth Road. Rowsley cafe is situated on your next left in the shopping area along with cash machines.
Continue on Chatsworth Road to Beeley, at Beeley take a right then a right again to begin what is a steep early section of a long but pleasant climb through sheltered woodland on a relatively quiet road.
Once at the top you are very exposed to the elements. Continue on Beeley Lane untill you reach the cross roads then turn left onto Darley Road. The roads are usually quiet up here. At the Junction of the A632 turn right onto Matlock Road to descend Amber Lane. This is a very fast descent. At the bottom of the descent turn right onto Matlock Green and ride past the park towards Matlock Bath.
